Submersible Well PumpSubmersible Well Pump

A submersible well pump - commonly referred to as an electrical submersible pump is a well pump which has a sealed motor placed very close to the body of the pump. The whole unit is submerged into the water or other fluid which is to be pumped.

They are known to be more efficient than other types such as jet pumps because they do not pull the fluid in a vacuum but rather push it by pressure. Some of the popular models include SF, JD and JS series from Gorman Rup pumps.

The working principle behind submersible pumps have been improved over the years but it still remains the same in that the liquids are subjected to very high centrifugal forces. These forces are produced by the rotating impeller. They then lose their kinetic energy within the diffuser. This enables the conversion of kinetic into pressure energy which then pulls the liquid out.

When placed in a well, the fluids enter the unit via an intake screen they are then lifted into various stages of the system. The turning impeller consists of bearings which reduce the tear and wear which may occur due to the high speed of rotation. They also support the shaft when it is turning.

They have very many applications in industry and home. An example is the single stage ones which are used for pumping of sewage, drainage and other general industrial pumping. They are also mainly used in the filters of aquariums. The multiple stage ones are mainly used in wells, boreholes and in oil wells.

Not all types of ESP are used for any type of fluid. Those that are typically used by the naval vessels should not be used to remove water from flooded areas since they are more powerful and might result in damage. They have complicated cooling systems which can get easily damaged thus burning the unit.

They also find their use in production of crude oil since they are efficient. It has been found that they can be used to lower the pressure at the bottom of the well so that more oil can be sucked out as compared to the on the ground pumping which has been commonly used.

The equipment operates on stages. For example there are several stages that are available and the fluid is pumped out from one stage to the other. The number of stages that are built in a system are mainly determined by the operational mode of that unit. They have impellers and diffusers whose main purpose is to direct the fluid into the next region on its way out.

A submersible well pump is one of the greatest and most efficient pumps in use today. Prices vary across manufacturers and models, so it pays to shop around before you buy.  You can find pumps at a well supply store or at an online retailer.  Your local well supply store will generally carry a good selection of models, although the price may be a bit higher than buying online.
