What to Look For There are a number of determining factors which should influence the choice of deep well pump model. These include water usage requirements or volume, the capacity of the well, and the lift required to deliver water at a given pressure. As these pumps are difficult to access for servicing and repairs, durability and long life are essential features. VolumeThe volume of water delivered is usually measured in gallons per minute or GPM. Retailers may also use GPH or gallons per hour in product descriptions. An average domestic household will require approximately 10 GPM. In industrial or agricultural settings, for example for irrigation purposes, pumps will be required to deliver somewhere upwards of 20 GPM. CapacityThe capacity of the pump should not exceed the capacity of the well to deliver the required flow. Over-pumping can cause water levels to drop. If the motor is forced to run dry for any appreciable length of time it can result in overheating and cause considerable damage. A driller's log should supply the necessary flow information. LiftIt is important to choose a model with an adequate power rating to meet lift requirements. Using a pump curve graph to calculate this is advisable. However, it should be expected that the greater the height or 'lift' of water, and the greater GPM required, the more powerful the motor will have to be. Typically, a power rating of approximately 1 horse power is required to supply a 10 GPM flow from a depth of 300 feet. DurabilityBoth casing and component materials must have good corrosion resistance. Stainless steel, bronze alloys, thermoplastics and hydro-glass are all corrosion resistant. Water with high levels of sand can also be problematic and shorten the life of pumps. Models with effective intake screens and which feature floating impeller stacks are much better equipped to withstand sand. LifeExcessive cycling, or cutting in and out, can also shorten the life of pumps. Ensuring the water storage tank is in good condition and that pressure levels are correctly set can prevent excessive cycling. Manufacturers with established reputations include Goulds, Grundfos, Myers, Craftsman, Sta-rite, Wayne and Flotec. Before purchasing a deep well pump it is advisable that buyers gain a thorough understanding of their water requirements and the capacity of their well to deliver these. Well drillers and reputable suppliers should be happy to offer advice. High quality pumps should deliver many years of service without need of constant repair.
